The B Movie Horror: My Experience

During the summer following my last year of A Levels the Horror picture Silverhide (Keith Robinson, 2015) went into production, the entirety of which was set at my college, Palmers College. My College Media Technician Keith Robinson had written one of his few screenplays years prior and had since been trying to get it produced to no avail, and instead decided he would take on the mantle of producing it himself with a low production value.

Knowing Keith throughout my time at Palmers and wanting to get into the media industry made this the opening for my defining media experience helping on his set as a crew member, primarily as an assisting editor and general assistant.

Silverhide is set in the Barren Mountains of Wales and sees a group of conspiracy theorists monitoring a top-secret Government facility which houses a deadly werewolf-like creature within. The setting is created using mainly green screen, and visual effects and cgi are abundant throughout to compensate for the location which is worlds apart from the setting. The film is full on suspense and horror from beginning to end, in perpetual darkness, favoring setting the chilling tone of the environment with its lingering close up shots and varying angles over the development of its characters.

The film also uses editing techniques to accentuate the tone of both suspense and shock using long dragging clips in combination with fast paced editing scenes especially in ones involving gore and interaction with the monster.

Also present is the use of narrative manipulation to make up for production shortcomings with how the monster is invisible in full moonlight. Using this narrative device allowed an explanation for why the monster is only seen twice throughout the picture, allowing consistency in the story and helping on the production budget front.

Silverhide is written to be of the B movie horror genre and does convey that with its visuals and acting but does lack in many areas which are either to do with the props, sets and production or the overall structure, script etc.
